Sweetgum and dogwood turn first
Lower elevations along the Mountain Fork River start to flicker. Mornings get crisp; afternoons still hit 80°F. A great window for fly fishing and floats with thinner crowds.

Week 2 · First two weeks of October
The hardwoods on Stevens Gap Road and inside Beavers Bend State Park hit gold and orange. Best two-week window for the David Boren Lookout and Skyline Trail.
Week 3 · Mid- to late October
The Talimena Scenic Byway, an hour east, peaks roughly Oct 18–31 most years. This is the single best day-trip of the entire fall season — start at sunrise from the cabin.
Week 4 · Early November
Oaks take over with deep red and copper against the pines. Cabins go quiet, the lake glasses off, and the hot tub finally feels like a hot tub again.
