Renting a pontoon on Broken Bow Lake: companies, costs, and tips

Renting a pontoon on Broken Bow Lake: companies, costs, and tips

Where to rent, what to expect, and how to actually have a great pontoon day on Broken Bow Lake.

A pontoon day is the centerpiece of most Broken Bow summer trips. Here's how to do it right.

WHERE TO RENT Broken Bow Water Adventures — the biggest operator. Newer fleet, multiple sizes (20–28 ft), full-day and half-day options. Best for groups of 6+. Reserve 2+ weeks ahead for summer weekends.

Beaver Bend Marina — state park location, easy access from Hochatown. Smaller fleet, fewer size options. Walk-up rentals work midweek.

Kiamichi Pontoon Rentals — boutique operator, smaller boats, sometimes available last-minute when the bigger places are sold out.

Skip the fees. Book direct.

Check live availability for both cabins and save up to 18% vs Airbnb. Use code PINES10 for 10% off your first direct stay.

COSTS Half-day (4 hours): $300–500 depending on boat size Full-day (8 hours): $500–900 Fuel: usually extra, $50–150 depending on how much you cruise Deposit: $500 hold on credit card, refunded at return

GROUP SIZE A 20-ft pontoon holds 8 comfortably (10 max with kids). A 24-ft holds 10–12. A 28-ft holds 12–14. The Coast Guard capacity is the legal limit; comfort is usually 1–2 fewer.

WHAT'S INCLUDED Life jackets (all sizes), basic safety brief, sometimes a small cooler. NOT included: ice, drinks, food, sunscreen, towels.

WHAT TO PACK Cooler with ice (most rentals don't have a real one). Sunscreen, reapplied. Hats. Sunglasses. Bluetooth speaker. Phone in a dry bag. Snacks. Lunch (bigger groups; eat on a beach). Cash for the marina tip.

BEST PLACES TO CRUISE The north-shore coves are the calmest. Cliff-jumping spots near Stevens Gap and the bluffs by Cedar Bluff Cove are the destinations. The main lake gets choppy after 11 AM on summer weekends — stick to coves.

BEST TIMES Summer weekdays > summer weekends (less traffic). Early morning (before 10 AM) is glass. Sunset cruises (5–8 PM) are popular and book first.

WHAT TO SKIP The cheapest 'just-the-boat' rental from random Craigslist operators. Insurance, maintenance, and accountability matter.

DESIGNATED DRIVER Oklahoma BUI laws are real. Have one sober driver. The lake patrol is active on holiday weekends.

KID TIP For families with under-6s, a half-day morning rental (8–12) beats a full day. Naps and sun are real.
