Driving to Broken Bow from Oklahoma City: route, time, and stops

The OKC-to-Broken-Bow route, traffic windows, and where to stop along the way.
Oklahoma City to Broken Bow is a longer drive than most people expect — but the route is easy.
DISTANCE & TIME 245 miles. 3 hours 45 minutes with no traffic. Plan 4–4.5 hours with one stop.
ROUTE I-40 E to Henryetta → US-69 S through McAlester → US-271 S to Antlers → US-3 E to Broken Bow → US-259 N to Hochatown.
This is a longer route than the map shows because there's no direct interstate. The southeast Oklahoma backroads are the trade-off — light traffic, beautiful country, occasional slow trucks.

FROM TULSA SUBTRACT Tulsa to Broken Bow is about 30 minutes shorter. Same general route — pick up US-69 S at Muskogee.
TRAFFIC TIPS This route has almost no metro traffic outside of OKC and Tulsa. The bottleneck is McAlester on Friday afternoons (school traffic + factory shifts).
GAS Fill up in McAlester (cheapest after OKC). Henryetta is the alternative. Antlers is a small town — gas works but pricier.
FOOD STOPS McAlester (2 hr in) — Pete's Place is a famous Italian restaurant from the coal mining era. Worth a sit-down lunch if you're not in a rush. Open daily. Antlers (3 hr in) — small-town diner options only. Most guests push through. Broken Bow (3.5 hr in) — Walmart for groceries.
SUPPLY STOP Walmart Broken Bow is the standard grocery stop. Hochatown Grocery covers basics if you don't want to detour into town.
WHEN TO LEAVE OKC Friday morning is best — clear roads, beautiful drive, at the cabin by 4 PM. Friday afternoon (after 3 PM) — fine, but you'll arrive after dark, which makes the last 20 winding miles harder. Friday evening (after 6 PM) — only if you've done the drive before. Deer are everywhere on US-259 at night.
RETURN TRIP Sunday afternoon traffic into OKC is light. Leave the cabin by noon to be home by dinner.
